Scientific Symposium "Discussions with Joeri Rogelj" at the VUB
To mark Prof. Joeri Rogelj's Doctor Honoris Causa VUB title, we hosted a Scientific Symposium.
- Wim Thiery (HYDR, VUB) explained the unprecedented lifetime exposure to climate extremes of young generations
- Harry Zekollari (HYDR, VUB) described how a 1.5 C emission target can help us save twice as many mountain glaciers in the world vs a 2.7 C target
- Chris Smith (HYDR, VUB) explained that it will be difficult to stay below 1.5 C, with all the more reason to push for faster/deeper/sooner emission cuts
- Corina Heri (Tilburg University, Netherlands) gave an overview of worlwide climate litigation, scientific evidence needs, and how every trial sets a precedent for the courts
- Joeri Rogelj (Grantham Institute, UK) gave a fascinating recap of how we came to the ambitious and necessary 1.5 C target and the responsibility of scientists to keep track of what policy/decision-makers need in terms of scientific guidance
